DANIEL SAID “NO”

“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the port= ion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore= he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself̶= 1; (Daniel 1:8). Daniel was one of the Israelites who was taken captive when t= he Babylonians, under the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, destroyed Jerusalem. He was part of a select grou= p who were to be trained in the king’s palace in the wisdom of the Chaldean= s. While living in the palace, they were expected to partake of a special diet= the king provided. At least some of these things were unlawful for the Hebrews = to eat and Daniel knew this. Therefore, he made up his mind not to defile hims= elf by partaking of these things. Daniel had the courage to say “no.̶= 1;

The circumstances emphasize his courage. He was away from home. He was a captiv= e. He could have reasoned, “When in Babylon, do as the Babylonians do.” The things offered to him were desirable. = The king would be displeased by his refusal. The pressure to give in and go alo= ng with the crowd was tremendous, but Daniel had the courage to take a stand a= nd resist temptation.

The Bible urges us to be courageous and strong in taking a stand for what is ri= ght.

  • Watch, stand fast in t= he faith, be brave, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13
  • Finally, my brethren, = be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Ephesians 6:10
  • You therefore must end= ure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 2:3

Those who serve in the army of God must be courageous and stand up for what they = know is right.

It is seldom easy to go against the crowd. As we look at the world around us, we = see an abundance of sin and immorality. The majority is doing one of two things. Either they approve of such, or they disapprove but are unwilling to take a stand and speak out. We can look for excuses to give in, or we can be like Daniel and have the courage to say “no.”

“My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent” (Proverbs 1:10). Good advice then an= d good advice now.
