HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

For many = years, this nation has marked the second Sunday in May as Mothers Day. Today is th= at day. While this is not a religious holiday, I do believe it is a good holid= ay for spiritual people to observe. In the latter part of Romans 13:7, Paul instructs us to render honor to whom honor is due. What person is due more honor than a mother who has given her all to care for a family?<= /span>

It seems natural for many of us to honor our mothers e= very day, but there are some who neglect to do so. “There is= a generation that curses its father, And does not bless its motherR= 21; (Proverbs 30:11). Some neglect to honor their mothers by bringing shame in living an immoral, even criminal, lifestyle. Others fail to honor them by f= ailing to honor God as their mother would want. Others fail to honor their mothers= by failing to care for them in illness and/or old age. If you don’t beli= eve that, talk to some of the people who work at nursing homes and convalescent centers.

Solomon describes the virtuous, worthy woman in the 31= st chapter of Proverbs. He discusses some of her characteristics and in verse = 28 says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also= , and he praises her.” To me, this comes across, not as a commandment, = but as a simple statement of fact. Some mothers are not honored because they ha= ve chosen an ungodly lifestyle. Some mothers live in such a way that it is hard for her children to call her blessed.

Nations r= ise and fall, empires prosper or crumble and men are stirred to great accomplis= hments or driven to shameful failure often because of the influence of a wife or mother. The wise poet has properly said, "The hand that rocks the crad= le, is the hand that rules the world."

For most = women, motherhood is a great privilege. Perhaps the greatest privilege of motherho= od is that of sharing and giving. No one shares and gives as a mother does. She shares her heart and her love as she weeps, laughs, sorrows and rejoices wi= th her child through the months and years of infancy, adolescence and youth and adulthood.

Motherhoo= d, while being a great privilege, also involves obligation. No task on earth requires more dedication, greater skill or fuller commitment. Her responsibilities demand devotion to the highest ideals and patient persever= ance over long years of time. Her task is formidable because there is no human obligation that is less adaptable to substitution than motherhood. You can substitute for the teacher, policeman, governor and almost anyone else but = no one has found an adequate substitute for a mother’s love.<= /span>

Happy and blessed is the home and the children of a loving mother -- one devoted to h= er husband, children and the Lord. Let us thank God if our home is so blessed.=
